Medicare Part D Plans and Prescription Drug Coverage Guidance
Medicare Part D plans can differ significantly in how they cover the same prescriptions. A plan with a lower premium does not necessarily have a lower estimated total cost after deductibles, medication tiers, pharmacy pricing and coverage requirements are considered.
Lowcountry Insurance Brokers compares the Medicare drug plans it offers using your current prescriptions, dosages and preferred pharmacies. The goal is to help you understand available coverage – not to recommend one plan for everyone.
What Is Medicare Part D Coverage?
Medicare Part D coverage helps pay for covered outpatient prescription medications. It is offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare. You can generally receive this coverage in one of two ways:
Part D arrangement | How it generally works |
Standalone Part D plan | Adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare. |
Medicare Advantage with drug coverage | Combines Medicare Part A, Part B and usually Part D through a Medicare-approved private plan. |
To join a standalone Part D plan, you generally must have Medicare Part A or Part B and live in the plan’s service area. To join Medicare Advantage with drug coverage, you generally must have both Part A and Part B and meet the plan’s eligibility requirements.
Important: You generally cannot join a standalone Part D plan while remaining enrolled in a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO. Doing so may disenroll you from Medicare Advantage and return you to Original Medicare. Different rules can apply to certain Medicare Advantage plan types.
